Kyrgyz. Equestrian statuette
Russia, Saint Petersburg
1879
Lanceray, Eugene, Chopin Felix factory
Bronze; casting, patinating, chasing, mounting
23.5 x 22.5 x 11.0 cm
On the base “ЛЪП.ЛАНСЕРЕ. и Ф. ШОПЕНЪ”
The model is set on an oval base, representing 'the ground,' with a plinth. It captures a fleeting moment just before a swift charge. Both figures lean back slightly, as if the horse and rider are united by a single impulse. The horse herder, gripping a lasso, is dressed in a costume characteristic of both the Kyrgyz people and the inhabitants of the steppe regions of Bashkiria.
In most cases, the figure is referred to as “Kyrgyz”; however, the title 'Bashkir Horse Herder' was given to the composition at the 1886 exhibition
