The sculptural composition depicts the Egyptian queen Cleopatra half-reclining on an ancient triclinium couch covered with a patterned bronze bedspread. The bed is flanked on both sides by two symmetrical figures of golden sphinxes. She wears a stylized ancient Egyptian costume with a wide ornament on her chest, a belt, and a loincloth; her head is covered with a decorative headpiece. Her right hand is thrown behind her head, while her left is bent at the elbow and rests on the headboard. The figure reposes on a stepped base made of polished dark green marble with white veins and onyx. Exposed areas of the body are executed in ivory. The queen's clothing, headpiece, and bracelets are executed in patinated and gilded bronze.
