    Stamped with the maker's mark "Mackay"; the Edinburgh date letter for 1833–1834 (capital letter "B"); two fineness hallmarks with "18" under a crown; the Edinburgh city mark showing a three-towered castle; and the duty mark featuring the profile of King George IV

    Gold presentation box of rectangular form, featuring a hinged lid. The exterior of the lid is decorated with a centrally placed, applied circular medallion depicting the coat of arms of the city of Edinburgh, framed along the perimeter by a chased frieze composed of shaped reserves, C-scrolls, foliage, and fruits. The sides of the box are adorned with chased Rocaille ornament framing views of Edinburgh, including Edinburgh Castle and the Royal High School. An earl's coronet is engraved at the center of the front panel. 

    Engraved on the interior of the lid with the presentation inscription:
    To the Right Hon.ble Charles, Earl Grey, K.G. &c. &c. THIS BOX Containing the Act of the Town Council which confers upon his Lordship The freedom of the City of Edinburgh is Presented by the Lord Provost, Magistrates, Councillors, and Citizens of Edinburgh In Testimony of their respect for his Character, and of their Gratitude for HIS EMINENT PUBLIC SERVICES 15th September, 1834
