Stamped on the interior of the lid and base with hallmarks: the maker's mark "JN"; the duty mark showing the profile of King George III within an oval; the London date letter for 1819–1820 (lowercase letter "d"); the gold standard mark for 18-karat gold (a crown); and the London Assay Office mark used between 1756 and 1821 (a crowned leopard's head)
A gold snuff box of rectangular form with rounded corners, featuring a hinged lid with a thumb piece. The exterior surfaces of the sides, lid, and base are decorated with variations of engine-turned patterns, including wavy and herringbone designs that form a decorative border. The thumb piece is adorned with a chased floral bouquet.
