    A scene depicting a general standing with his back to the viewer and a slightly bowed military officer addressing him is presented on a rectangular, vertically oriented sheet with rounded corners. Figures of palace attendants in liveries and guests are sketched in the background. In the upper part of the sheet, there is an inscription in French executed in pencil: “Drôleries du hasard // Les incommodités de la croix de la Légion d’honneur” (translated as: The Vicissitudes of Chance // The Inconveniences of the Cross of the Legion of Honor).The author's signature and date are located in the lower-right corner: Zichy 88.
